I like grits. I really like them cooked for a long time until they are creamy with butter and a lot of salt. I like them cooked not so long with butter and a lot of salt. Okay, fine, I like them cooked almost any way with butter and a lot of salt. But my kids are not so impressed.
I know from experience that how a food is presented has a lot to do with how it is received. And I wanted to have grits for lunch yesterday.
I started to boil the water and the kidlets filtered into the kitchen with the usual "What's for lunch?" "Popcorn Soup." I answered. Parker's expression betrayed his skepticism and said "Those look like grits." "What are grits?" I asked. He read the box and said "Corn." "What do I put in grits?" I questioned. "Salt and pepper and butter." he replied.
"What is popcorn?" I then asked, and the light went on "Popcorn is corn and salt and butter!" he said with glee. "Wow! Grits ARE popcorn soup...but with pepper, popcorn doesn't have pepper."
After we established the true variables; pepper, water and corn oil, it was decided. What we were having for lunch was indeed creamy popcorn soup. And they ate it up. And enjoyed it. It was fun.
Posted by stephanie at August 5, 2005 08:31 AMGlad i'm not the only one! I tried roasted hamburger and solid spaghetti with Jessica, but it still was meatloaf to her. Elizabeth, who refused all seafood at a young age, fortunately did believe there was such a thing as chicken shrimps.
